How we protect your information
The law asks us to verify family income and to acknowledge every donation. That means we hold sensitive information. Here's what, why, who sees it and for how long.
From donors
Name, email, address, donation amount, designated school, payment method handled by our payment processor (we never see or store your card number). We never ask for your Social Security number. Your donor number is generated by us under the IRS method and reported to the IRS with your donation, as the law requires.
From families
Household members, children's names and grades, school, and income documents (tax return, W-2s or paystubs, or proof of program participation). Documents are encrypted in transit and at rest, viewed only by CEN staff who verify eligibility, and never shared with your school beyond the fact and amount of an award. Kept after the last award for as long as audit rules require, then deleted.
From schools
Enrollment confirmations and contact details. Shared with no one outside CEN.
Who else sees anything
- The IRS, under the donor-number reporting rule.
- The states that list us, in annual reports and the audit, in aggregate.
- Our auditor.
- Our payment processor, for payments only.
No one else, and we don't sell or share lists.
