For families
Are we likely to qualify?
The federal limit is 300% of your area's median income, for the calendar year before you apply. Answer three questions and we'll show you the figure for your county and whether you're likely under it.
The federal limit
300%
of your area's median income. Fill in the form to see the dollar figure for your county and household size.
This is a guide, not a decision. CEN confirms eligibility from documents when you apply. Nothing you enter leaves your browser. The income limits here are samples for now, so treat the result as a guide. Your school confirms eligibility when you apply.

Method
How the check works
- Step 01
We find your county's figure
The limit is 300% of the median income where you live, set by HUD each year and scaled by household size.
- Step 02
We compare your income
Last calendar year's total income before tax, for everyone in the household who earns.
- Step 03
Some families skip the income test
Foster children qualify automatically, and families in a needs-based program like SNAP or Medicaid meet the test.
Help
Questions, answered
Is there an income requirement?
Yes. Household income for the year before you apply must be at or below 300% of your area's median income. The checker shows the figure for your county. (Source: §25F(c)(2))
Which year's income counts?
The calendar year before the application. A 2027 application uses 2026 income. (Source: §25F(c)(2)(A))
What documents do I need?
Your most recent federal return, or W-2s or paystubs for every earner, or proof of participation in a needs-based program. We'll confirm before you upload.
How much will we receive?
It depends on your school's fund and the number of eligible families. Your school and CEN set award amounts each cycle.
