What is a scholarship granting organization?

Schools need a scholarship granting organization to receive the new scholarships. CEN built one only for Evangelical and Catholic schools, on a model it already runs in Ohio.

A scholarship granting organization, or SGO, is the vehicle the law uses. It collects donations and turns at least 90% of them into scholarships for K-12 students. For a school's families to receive these scholarships, the school has to work with an SGO.

Why an SGO just for Christian schools

CEN SGO is a national SGO built only for Evangelical and Catholic schools, and it's led by former heads of Christian schools. The donations, the schools and the mission line up. Donors who want to support Christian schools know where their money goes. Schools that teach a Biblical worldview have a network that shares their mission.

Built on a proven model

CEN SGO is built by the team behind the Ohio Christian Education Network, which has a real record of scholarships awarded to families who needed them under Ohio's state credit. The federal program takes a model that works at the state level and opens it to the whole country.

That record answers the first question a careful donor or head of school asks: has anyone actually done this? Yes. The Ohio work showed the approach is sound. The federal credit gives it national reach.

What it opens up

For families, it's affordability. A child can attend a school that grows their faith and character when cost would have put it out of reach.

For schools, it's stability and growth: more families who can afford tuition, revenue to fund the real cost of education, and room to reinvest in teachers and students.

For donors, it's a way to invest in a child's future at no cost beyond the tax they already owe, supporting schools that teach Biblical principles.

When it starts

Donations count from January 1, 2027. Until then, schools can join CEN SGO and donors can sign up to hear the day giving opens.

What this means for you

CEN SGO serves only Evangelical and Catholic schools and builds on a program CEN already runs in Ohio. Schools can join now, before giving opens on January 1, 2027.
